I read the Kindle edition.For anyone with a history in St Paul, or has an interest in the founding and early growth of frontier newspaper publishing, this merits an easy 4 stars. Written over a peiod of years around the turn of the last century, Moore's perspective of local and national happenings is interesting. He delves into the Great Sioux Uprising at a time when the feelings were still very raw. Much the same with his treatment of the Civil War. And he recaps a couple dozen hotel/inn fires that occured in the 1860's, 70's and 80's. Businesses and sometimes city blocks burned down overnight. The occasional devastatation was simply a part of life. On that note, Moore details the evolution of the St Paul Fire Department.
A drawback for the casual modern reader is the detail the writer goes into in listing names of various people, particularly employees of the Pioneer Press and soldiers in the army. But those with a long St Paul family heritage might love it. As it is, I recognized the names of more important figures in the book from current streets named after them. That said, it's easy to skim through these areas.
